I’ve met a lot of people who are scared of colonic hydrotherapy – they have mental images of lying on cold tiles being sluiced down with cold water from a hosepipe! With modern techniques, equipment and hygienic precautions, though, it’s more like a spa treatment than a health procedure. After the treatment, most clients feel calm, de-stressed and ready to face the world again. I’m always looking for ways to help my clients feel even more relaxed during the treatment itself, and now I’ve hit on a way to make the whole experience…er…sh*t hot.
I’ve always used an electric blanket to help clients relax during a massage, but recently I had a ‘eureka moment’ and I’m using it for colonic hydrotherapy clients as well. It’s working brilliantly – normally, I spent the treatment time chatting away and setting the world to rights, but now most people are so calm they’re falling asleep right there on the table. I love to go the extra mile for my clients, and I don’t know of any other clinics going to such lengths – in fact, I might just patent the idea …!
The therapeutic benefits of heat have been well researched, and applying topical heat can help with a whole range of conditions from arthritis and fibromyalgia to poor flexibility and allergies. Heat works to reduce the pain associated with stiff, tense muscles by increasing the blood flow to the affected area. In turn, the blood vessels of the muscles get more oxygen and nutrients, encouraging the muscles to relax and come out of spasm.
The blanket helps anyone who’s feeling a little tense before a session to unwind. Some clients come in with back ache before a treatment, due to the pressure of a full colon on the spinal column, so lying down with some topical heat is half an hour of heaven! It can also help to alleviate some of the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, such as abdominal pain or cramping.
