We’re all getting older, one day at a time. Whether you decide to fight it with the latest ‘miracle’ skin cream or give in disgracefully, there’s no way of beating it – but there are plenty of ways of staying healthy and active.

September is healthy aging month in the USA, an annual event designed to focus national attention on the positive aspects of growing older. The point of the awareness month is to encourage local events that promote taking personal responsibility for your own health, and although there’s currently nothing comparable in the UK we think pro-active planning is a great idea. As you get older, your body changes. You may find you need more or less sleep, your digestion may change and your metabolism slows down slightly, so it’s important to follow a good diet and exercise programme.

If you’re over fifty, you may need to increase your intake of certain vitamins and minerals such as vitamins D, B6, B12, folic acid and calcium. The best way to do this is with a balanced diet rather than supplements, so eat plenty of oil fish, whole grains, milk and green leafy vegetables. Eat plenty of fibre as well, as this helps avoid digestive problems. Eat a high-fibre cereal daily, and swap processed white bread for wholemeal. Eating your fruit and vegetables is better than drinking them as a juice, as you’ll get the full benefit of the fibre they contain. Eat as much of the fruit as possible including any edible peel.

Of equal importance with eating well is taking regular exercise. Walking and swimming are excellent, low-impact forms of exercise that will help keep you in good shape, although do consult your doctor before taking up any form of activity from scratch.

Something else you might like to consider as part of a healthy regime is colonic hydrotherapy. This safe, non-chemical treatment is an ideal way of helping to remove toxins from your colon, improving digestive health and supporting a balanced lifestyle.
