What is a Glycolic Skin Peel?
Skin Peels are a brilliant way to improve the skin’s texture by resurfacing it, leaving it brighter, firmer and with an improved appearance. They have been around for hundreds of years. There are stories about Cleopatra bathing in sour milk, which is in fact a similar rejuvenation treatment, as the sour milk contains lactic acid, which is one of the key ingredients we use now for exfoliation purposes and is still in some skin peels.
Glycolic Acid is another form of lactic acid that has been derived from sugar cane. It is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) which removes the dead cells on the surface of the skin (causing blocked pores and dull or rough skin). By removing these dead cells, you can restart the natural skin function, regenerating the skin to leave fresher, brighter skin.
The skin peel ingredients have a very small molecule size, which means they can penetrate through to the upper layers of the epidermis. The product that I use contains only 40% acid which is not enough to cause unwanted peeling or irritation (burning does not necessarily lead to a positive outcome), yet it is strong enough to create superb results. The ingredients help to shed the dead cells on the top layer of the skin and encourage new skin cells which will look fresher and brighter.
How does a Skin Peel work?
I thoroughly cleanse the skin first in preparation, similar to a normal facial treatment.
I then apply the skin peel solution to the skin which can give a pleasant tingling sensation. It’s not painful, so no numbing solution needs applying. I leave this on for about 5 minutes.
I then remove the solution from your skin.
You will have radiant skin from the moment you finish your treatment. Some patients have slightly reddened skin, but similar to having been in the sun. This should settle down in a few hours after the treatment.
The whole treatment takes between 15 and 30 minutes in full.
What can I expect after a Glycolic Skin peel?
You will have visibly clearer and glowing skin that will continue to look radiant for a few days afterwards. After about 3-5 days you can experience a mild flaking of the skin, however I will advise you of post treatment after-care that you can carry out at home.
After the process is complete, your skin will be very sun-sensitive for a few days, so I don’t advise doing it just before a holiday.
I would suggest not using make up on the skin or products such as fake tan which may irritate it. I would also avoid hot baths/showers for 24 hours afterwards.
When will I see results?
Results will be immediate and will continue to build after you have left the clinic. I will give you personal after-care advice to carry out at home to continue the effects. I suggest a series of 3 treatments minimum to achieve the best results.
