What is a Hopi Candle?

A Hopi Ear Candle is a hollow cylinder made from unbleached cotton or muslin which has been coated in natural ingredients including beeswax and essential oils. The ear candles are approx. 22 centimetres (8 3/4 inches) long. The candle is lit and then placed gently into the ear.

Benefits of Hopi Ear Candling?

Hopi Ear Candles (also known as Thermo Auricular Therapy), have been proven to have many medical and therapeutic benefits. Many people use ear candles purely for relaxation purposes, others for medical reasons and these are a few of the many benefits that have been documented:

  • Relief for sufferers of glue ear and headaches
  • Reduce the build up of ear wax relieving pressure in the ear
  • Relief from tinnitus

How do Hopi Ear Candles work?

Well, they work similar to a chimney on a building, through a process called convection, which translates as ‘movement caused by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the influence of gravity, which consequently results in transfer of heat.’ Convection draws the impurities up through the candle to the top.

The convection also causes a mild suction within the ear and this coupled with the warmth from the candle and the relaxing vapours, gently massages the eardrum. The gentle massage causes any pressure built up in the head to be regulated, thereby relieving the sinuses. This also helps in other ways too:

  • Herbal vapours soothe the outer ear and also strengthen the immune system
  • The warmth helps stimulate the blood flow, strengthening the lymph glands and thereby stimulating the energy points on the outer ear

The ear candle does not actually remove the ear wax – this is a misconception! It purely loosens it and the ear wax then comes out easier and naturally over the following days after a treatment.

The length of time an ear candle burns represents the possible extent of any problems you may have in your ear. The usual burn time of an ear candle is between 10-15 minutes. The longer the candle burns, the deeper the potential problem could be. The colour of the smoke also has a bearing too. If the smoke is a dark colour then this could indicate a problem. A good healthy sign is when the smoke is light grey, light blue or if there is no smoke at all.

If you feel a blocked sensation during the treatment, this is usually due to the vapours and will pass shortly after the treatment ends.

If the blocked sensation occurs afterwards this usually shows that the candling process has caused the build-up of ear wax to loosen and this should be alleviated as the ear wax comes out naturally.

Is Hopi Ear Candle treatment suitable for everyone?

Hopi Ear Candles are not suitable for everyone. This is not an exhaustive list but the main reasons not to have the treatment include:

  • Anyone with a recent head or neck injury
  • Grommets in the ear
  • Ear infections
  • Perforated ear drum
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Circulation problems
  • Epilepsy
  • Eczema or psoriasis around the ears
  • Neuralgia
  • Open wounds around the ear
  • Recent ear surgery
  • Any ear problems for which you are still under the supervision of your doctor
  • Allergy to bee stings – surprising I know, but this is due to the beeswax used in the candles.
